About the wine

Lazzarito, the Serralunga d’Alba single-vineyard cru of Mirafiore, Italy’s royal Barolo. Ripe plum, tobacco leaf, mint, rosemary, cinnamon and dried mushroom form a complex, many-layered bouquet; the palate is elegant and refined, with the firm yet velvety tannin structure typical of Serralunga. One of Serralunga’s finest single-vineyard Barolos, with ageing potential of more than 20 years.

PalateVery dense, close-knit tannins give structure, together with softness and balance.

Winemaking

VinificationDestemmed and crushed grapes are warmed to 32–33°C, with frequent pump-overs during the first three days. As alcohol rises, the temperature is lowered to about 25°C to avoid excessive tannin extraction. Délestage is carried out during 20–30 days of maceration, and malolactic fermentation follows straight after alcoholic fermentation in tanks at about 20°C.

AgeingAged in oak casks (2,000–14,000 L), with further bottle ageing from the second year. The aim is to refine the tannins without adding woody aromas.

VineyardLazzarito, Serralunga d’Alba, 350–400 m, south and south-west facing; Helvetian (Miocene) marine sediments of whitish-grey calcareous marl. Average yield 40 hl/ha.
